What is Climate Controlled Storage?
Climate controlled storage, which is occasionally also called temperature-controlled storage, is a storage unit that is constructed to keep its contents at stagnant humidity and temperature levels. Climate controlled units are typically kept between 55 and 85 degrees, depending on the season, and are usually interior units, though some exceptions exist. Storage facilities adjust the climate within the units to compensate for changes in the weather, so that customers’ belongings are protected from moisture- and temperature-related damage. Some storage facilities offer heated storage, which increases temperature in the units during cold winter months, but does not differ from standard storage in the warmer months. Why use Climate Controlled Storage?
In contrast to climate controlled or heated storage, standard storage units have their temperature and humidity unmonitored, and are ventilated year round. This means that items that are sensitive to heat, cold, humidity, or dryness run the risk of alteration or damage. When deciding what type of storage unit your belongings require, consider whether your belongings are susceptible to the following:
- Heat-based expanding or contracting
- Becoming unusable or damaged due to improper storage temperature
- Discoloration, warping, or deterioration caused by moisture
Many items are strongly recommended to be placed in climate controlled storage, including:
- Any furniture or significant items made of or containing leather, metal, wood, or upholstery
- Household appliances, electronics, media and media players
- Important or sentimental documents, photographs, antiques, collectibles, artwork, or clothing
- Sports or musical equipment
- Wine, medical supplies, and makeup
Other factors to consider when deciding whether to rent a climate controlled unit include the variance in temperature and humidity of the climate outside the unit, the monetary or sentimental value of the stored items, and the length that items will be stored for. Items that are not susceptible to damage through heat or dryness, but are prone to alteration by cold or moisture may be safely stored in heated storage. If you are unsure of the type of storage unit you should purchase, talk to an employee at the storage facility and inform them of your situation. They will help guide you towards making sure your belongings are kept as safe as possible.
